MacBook not turning on is one of the most alarming faults but in most cases it has a solution. Here is what to do step by step.
A MacBook that won't turn on is one of the most alarming situations for any Apple user. Black screen, no response, and you don't know if your data is lost. The good news is that in most cases the problem has a solution.
Steps to try before calling a technician
1. Check the battery and charger
Make sure the battery is not completely flat. Connect the original charger for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on. Check that the MagSafe LED lights up (amber = charging, green = charged) or that the USB-C is properly connected.
2. Force restart
Hold the power button for 10 seconds. On newer MacBooks with Touch ID, the power button is in the top right corner of the keyboard.
3. SMC reset
The SMC (System Management Controller) controls basic functions like the battery and power. On MacBook with T2 chip or Apple Silicon: shut down, wait 30 seconds and power on. Older Intel MacBooks have a specific key combination.
4. Check the display
Sometimes the MacBook turns on but the screen does not illuminate. Shine a torch at the screen and check if you can see the image faintly. If so, the problem is the backlight, not the logic board.
When you need a technician
If after these steps the MacBook still won't turn on, it is time to call a technician. The most common causes requiring repair are: completely failed battery, logic board fault, damaged charging port or SSD failure.
