Laptop not charging: what to do

Laptop not charging is a very common fault. Before buying a new charger, find out if the problem is the charger, the battery or the port.

When the laptop won't charge, the first thought is usually that you need a new charger. But there are several possible causes and the charger is not always to blame.

Reasons why a laptop might not charge

1. The charger is faulty

This is the most common cause. Try with another compatible charger if you have access to one. If the laptop charges with another charger, the problem is the adapter.

2. Worn-out or defective battery

Batteries have a useful life of 2-4 years under normal use. If the battery does not hold charge or the indicator shows erratic percentages, it needs replacing.

3. Damaged charging port

The charging connector can loosen or break over time. If the cable does not fit snugly or you have to hold it at a particular angle to charge, the port needs repairing.

4. Motherboard issue

In more serious cases the problem is in the charging circuit on the motherboard. This requires professional diagnosis.

• Inspect the charger cable for cuts or sharp bends
• Try booting the laptop without the battery, on charger power only
• Shine a torch into the charging port to check for debris or bent pins
